What is Performance Coaching?

Performance coaching is a process of supporting a 'coachee' to discover and implement personal solutions to challenging issues or areas of performance. It can be described as one off or a sequence of guided conversations that enable a “coachee” to unearth their best solutions. These solutions, because they are intrinsic to the “coachee,” are more likely to succeed and endure than solutions imposed by others.

Performance coaching is:

  • A conversation designed and conducted to enhance coachee's well being or performance.
  • A process which a coachee and coach have clear expectations, agreements, actions, and reviews.
  • A partnership that allows a 'coachee' to be supported and challenged by a coach.
  • Based on the premise that performance in any field can be improved by working in partnership with a coach.
  • Setting aside time to explore in conversation how performance can be taken to a new level.

Are You Coachable?

Consider the following before you begin a coaching process and be prepared to raise any concerns or questions before your first session or during the first session.

  1. A coaching relationship must be entered into willingly.
  2. Are you interested in being in a coaching process?
  3. Are you ready to work on and achieve what you need and want, to be better at what you do?
  4. Are you up for the challenge of finding new ways to do things or make changes?
  5. Are you interested and motivated to find gains and improvements?

A coachee begins a coaching process with certain expectations, perceptions, needs and wants.
Overall the process and sessions involved aim to explore a coachee's motivation and purpose, goals and focuses, experiences and insights, those who influence and impact them, and the actions and reflections they can be taking and having.

Often people seek a coach when they need to find clarity, build confidence, take perspective, access support and the benefit from an accountability partner.
As you consider the question, “Am I coachable," be honest with yourself. If you’re ready to put in the time, energy and work to achieve new levels of success, then your answer is “yes.”

Coach Opportunity Reactions & Responses

  1. Awesome how good is this, when do I start? (Positive)
  2. Happy to do this coaching thing but how it will help? (Neutral)
  3. What's this for and why are we required to do it? (Skeptical)

Admittedly, coaching is not for everyone. It calls for doing things differently and breaking away from past patterns that have produced your results. Achieving extraordinary results can be demanding and requires holding yourself accountable to the work you’ve agreed to do.

If however a coachee has reservations, questions or concerns its important these are addressed at the beginning of any coaching process for it to continue and be successful.
